The half-point is essential for ballet dancers. It's important to choose half-points that are adapted to your level of practice and the shape of your foot.

The importance of the demi-pointe in ballet

The half-point allows dancers to develop their technique and strength, while protecting their feet. Dancing on demi-pointe improves your balance, posture, flexibility and muscle control. It is also used to prepare dancers for pointe dancing, which requires more advanced strength and technique.

Differences between half points and points

Visit classical danceThere are generally two types of bootie: demi-pointes and pointe.

Half shoes are generally made from soft materials such as canvas or leather. They are designed to wrap comfortably around the dancer's foot while providing appropriate support. The sole is softer than that of the pointe shoes to allow the foot to flex and move smoothly.

The tipsThe toes of the shoes are hard. This allows the dancer to dance on tiptoe. Pointe work requires a specific technique and is generally reserved for more advanced dancers with good musculature. In most cases, it is possible to start working on pointe from the age of 12, if the strength and musculature of the foot allow it. The teacher will determine whether the dancer is capable of dancing on pointe.

The sole

Dancers can choose between full sole half shoes and twin sole half shoes. Full soles are recommended for beginners and young dancers up to size 33. They provide good support for the foot and allow you to work on strength and the instep.

On the other hand, bi soles are more flexible. They are more suitable for more advanced dancers. This sole is made up of two parts: one at the front of the foot and another under the heel.

How do I choose a pair of demi-pointes?

To choose the right pair of demi-pointes, it's important to try on several models so you can compare them. The demi-pointe should fit perfectly, neither too tight nor too loose. The toes should lie flat and the shoe should not float. You should also choose a width that suits the shape of your feet. Finally, the type of sole is also important. A full sole is best for beginners, while a bi-sole is best for more advanced dancers.

We recommend that you try on both feet in the shop, as one foot is always stronger than the other. Don't hesitate to put your feet on half-point to check that you don't feel any pain in the big toe or behind the heel.

Maintaining your half-points

To look after your half-point shoes, we recommend that you don't machine-wash them, but instead clean them with a damp cloth. What's more, to extend their lifespan, don't hesitate to have two pairs so that you can alternate. As with pedals and spikes, it's advisable to replace half-points as soon as they show signs of wear.
